Still doesn't open, GS 9.50 still the installed Ghostscript version... :(
As stated, a similar unexplained issue has arisen periodically over the years, probably usually reported in Windows, this is likely the first time that a test file has been posted.

It seems that the incompatibility with Ghostscript persists in XnView 1.8.7: PDFs cannot be previewed (I have GS 9.53. installed).
Installing GS 10 on Devuan (=Debian 11 ca.) is a mess: it requires updates of all kinds of dependencies that are way too difficult to install ... and compiling GS 10.05 ...

This problem is supposed to be fixed in XnView MP 1.8.7. Please check and confirm the bug fix here.

We are still curious why when called from command line we were able to convert .eps files to .png files prior to installing Ghostscript.
Could you possibly have had Ghostscript installed without realising it, try typing 'ghostscript - help' at the command prompt.

We installed Ghostscript and added it to the system path. When we call the .bat file from our web application server using java code, NConvert now produces a .png file foreach eps file found in the c:\images directory. Your suggestion works!
