... have a space between the thumbnail files, even when I set spacing to 20?

I need to click on an empty space between the thumbnail files and make a marquee selection, so that I can select multiple files easily, delete grouped selections etc, like I do on windows file explorer. Is it possible?

Okay if you have a rectangular shape to paste but an odd shape cutout or a circle would be impossible. The lack of a marquee tool is a limitation but I accept that.

... trial and error approach. We need to be able to draw the crop as with the normal crop tool or its faster to do batch crop in elsewhere. I rather don't open photoshop for only a batch crop & resize. :)
It doesn't need as complete crop tool as the non batch one, simply drawing a marquee would be enough.

Exactly. Because XnView isn't meant to be a full–fledged image editor , it only has a basic rectangular Marquee tool for cropping and is lacking a Magic Wand (for selecting areas of same/similar color) or Lasso (for creating freeform selections).

This is still present in v2.38 but left or right clicking anywhere on the picture afterwards clears the problem for me.

The important bit is that you keep the mouse button all the time and then press Tab key (while mouse button is still pressed). To me it looks as if XnView doesn't update internal selection coordinates until you release the mouse button. This ...

XnView 2.37

- load picture
- draw marquee selection and keep mouse-button pressed
- hit TAB key

- draw another marquee selection and keep mouse-button pressed
- hit TAB key


and so on.

Result: FIXED (2.40)

Open a image in XnView that it is displayed in a Viewer tab and not only in the browser tab.
You can drag a selection marquee with your left mouse button
Right click in the selection and you can set the aspect of the selection, or crop the image to the selection, etc. etc ...

I'm not sure why I would have thought to enter the key word "marquee." That refers to the style of "moving" line - which the area selection outline in XnView classic is not.

Marquee doesn't refer to the function the line performs.
I asked about changing line color, not the ...
