Help on Zip and Rar files

Postby Oddwaffle » Thu Mar 08, 2007 8:18 am

I just download xnview 1.90.2 with all the add--ons and plug-ins

I often read/view comics and manga in compressed format. They are all a series of images. When I try to use Xnview to view a picture file in a zip file I can view it but I can not go to the next image using mouse scrolling or the next button. It seems that XNview is reading the decompressed image in the TEMP folder. So I can't go to the next image without exiting the viewer. If I press enter while viewing I will be moved to the TEMP folder instead of going back to the zip file.

Is there anyway to read a zip/rar file as if they were in a folder?

Open the browser, go to the zip file, and press F11 to view it in fullscreen.

Don't try to view the zip file fullscreen. Treat the zip file as though it were a folder. Double click it from within the browser. If there are folders in the zip file, you will see them now, just double click them to open them. Once you get to the images within the zip file (it'll show you thumbs of them, just as though you were viewing a folder), open one of the images into fullscreen and then use page up/down and everything should work fine.
(fyi There are 3 ways to open it in fullscreen mode, F11, right click->fullscreen, or there's an option in the settings where you can set it to open fullscreen on doubleclick.)

Maybe these will help:
A folder with a zip file-
http://allspark.net/cypherswipe/folder-with-zip.jpg
After double clicking the the archive (which had it's images within a folder within the archive)-
http://allspark.net/cypherswipe/zip-opened.jpg
After double clicking the folder within the archive, I'm presented with the images themselves-
http://allspark.net/cypherswipe/zip-opened-2.jpg
After opening one of the images, I see i fullscreen, and page up/down navigates to the next/previous image-

Hello all,

I've got the same problem as described in the first post.

Once you get to the images within the zip file (it'll show you thumbs of them, just as though you were viewing a folder), open one of the images into fullscreen and then use page up/down and everything should work fine.

That's exactly what doesn't work.

To be more specific, here's exactly what happens (with screenshots reduced in size) :

1) I'm browsing a directory with some zip files. Those zip files directly contain images (without any subdirectory).

Screenshot :
Image

2) I double-click on one of the zip-files in the xnview browser. The images inside appear in the browser one after the other (here i've waited a few seconds so all of them have appeared).

Screenshot :
Image

3) I double-click on the first picture of the zip-file in the xnview browser. It is correctly displayed.

Screenshot :
Image

BUT, as you can see, the "next picture" and "next file" options are not available. And of course if I press whatever key usually triggers the next picture command, it doesn't do anything - while I expect the program to display the second picture of the archive.

4) If I re-double-click on the displayed picture to get back into browser mode, it appears xnview is in fact now browsing the temp directory.

Screenshot :
Image

So, xnview is now browsing the c:\windows\temp dir instead of the archive itself. And of course, the consequence is it doesn't find the next files since they are not in the temp dir.

Does anyone have any idea how to solve this problem ? This is the only reason that prevents me from uninstalling the ugliness that is acdsee and using this wonderful program instead.

Thanks a lot.

1) Your images aren't working, the site they're hosted on isn't responding. Try uploading them here: http://imageshack.us/

2) You said "BUT, as you can see, the "next picture" and "next file" options are not available. ". That alone tells us you're not doing it right. When viewing images in an archive, you MUST view the image in FULLSCREEN mode. Fullscreen means that there is nothing on the screen except the image itself. I repeat: FULLSCREEN MODE HAS-NO-BUTTONS! NOR TOOLBARS OF ANY KIND. If you are seeing any buttons or toolbars, YOU ARE NOT IN FULLSCREEN MODE, you are in VIEWER mode. You MUST be in FULLSCREEN mode to browse through an archive. Since there are no buttons or toolbars of any kind if fullscreen mode, you must use page up/page down buttons on your keyboard to navigate.

Yes, it is stupid that the whole archive thing works in fullscreen mode but not viewer mode, yes it makes no sense, yes it engenders a great deal of confusion, but that's the way it is.

Yeah, i'm actually quite unlucky. the site i used is usually extremely reliable - it just appears they decided last night to update the linux kernel to the new version that just got out. tss...

I know I know I know.

I had already tried fullscreen. Except, i did what I usually do, which means opening the image normally (viewer mode), AND THEN immediately switching to fullscreen mode. That was apparently enough to make it lose its senses.

But by DIRECTLY viewing them into fullscreen mode (THAT was the missing info), i was able to make it work, thanks.

I agree with the last three lines ... ! :?

Is there any chance it could get fixed in an upcoming version ?

Thanks again for your replies.

I think I finally get it!
I used to have exactly same thing you described in above picture, (I can see those pictures now)

the key is , in the folder view with pics in zip, instead of double click on the pic then press F11 to go fullscreen

you have to select the pic in folder view (don't double click), then press F11

in this way you can go through the zip file without end up in the temp folder

I had the same problem as the original poster.

It seems the zip/rar plugin won't work with files while the directory is listed in thumbnail mode, if the archive consists of subdirectories. It will work when in details mode.

Also as mentioned before, the program will take you to the Temp directory instead of the archive directory when exiting out.

Also the slideshow option doesn't work with archive files that have subdirectories.

All of this is well implemented in ACDsee. I hope this gets fixed in the next release.

alas, acdsee is way too slow browsing archives, that's why I switched to XnView

but, 1.91 has ignored this outrageous bug and still takes to temp folder.

and furthermore it crashed in some zips I have unless I remove unused plugins: Xbmf, Xcompound, Xeri, Xfif, Xfpx, Xiwc, Xjbig, Xjng, Xjp2, Xjpegls, XMrSid, Xp2, Xpax, Xpwc, Xsff, Xsusie, Xwhypic, Xwic, Xwlm, Xwmp

the way use F11 key does work.

But is it possible to add an option that can use doubleclick instead of use F11,
or make it never go to the temp folder?

PTW. How about add a little improvement to this zippack view ,
like make the zippack as a folder show in the foldertree pane.
unzip viewing picture into ram instead of unzip to harddisk.

Wow this is a great thread. Now I can finally view zip files good. Any chance it could work with double click too? It's very confusing as it is.
