0.85: *.jpg_original files after editing metadata

Post by monitor »

After working with some images - editing and inspecting metadata - mostly with XnViewMP, I find several files with the extension jpg_original in my directories.
I understand that these might be produced by ExifTool; I did inspect some files by some Exiftool derivatives or GUI front ends, but I don't recall editing or changing any data with those.

Does XnViewMP use Exiftool in any way for editing or changing the images.
TIA.

PS: I did search the fori=um, but the search engine always ignores the jpg_ prefix :-(

ExifTool is definitely used in displaying EXIF data in certain cases (there is a dedicated tab for it) - however these files appear only when EXIF is modified (?)

After browsing search results for "jpg_original" and the above descriptions it's pretty sure that these files are created by Exiftool.

@Pierre: In which detailed scenario are these file created? Are these files of some use for the XnView user? Is there a way to surpress these files?

O.k., that confirms the assumption.

From the user perspective there is XnView MP, only, and it looks as if XnView MP creates these files. I much doubt that these files are wanted by users. Is there a way to surpress these backup files?

yes, but only if the setting for backup is not enabled

How can the user change the setting for backup? In XnView MP? Or in ExifTool? As written before from the user perspective there is XnView MP, only. Could you add a setting in XnView MP that allows for changing the setting for backup?

Many posts but little info. :? The setting you mention is for JPEG lossless transformation. But is there a setting that allows a user to enable/disable the creation of files by the EXIF tool? Could you add such a setting in XnView MP?

O.k. I guess two (or more) settings would be good:
1. "Make backup when applying lossless JPEG transformations"
2. "Make backup when writing IPTC/EXIF data (EXIFTool)"
