ATM, I'm not 100% sure: The current star ratings are not just stars, they have labels. So one star might be good in a star only rating. But in XnView's current rating one star is "Poor". Due to the lack of other ratings people might have used the rating "Poor" for outtakes for example.

XnView MP uses xmp:Label for storing color labels.

  • xmp:Label
    • A word or short phrase that identifies a resource as a member of a user-defined collection.
NOTE: One anticipated usage is to organize resources in a file browser.
MP's star ratings (0 and 1 through 5) are stored in xmp:Rating. As far as I know, -1 is still available to be used as rejection flag.

  • xmp:Rating
    • A user-assigned rating for this file. The value shall be -1 or in the range [0..5], where -1 indicates “rejected” and 0 indicates “unrated”.
If xmp:Rating is not present, a value of 0 may be assumed.
NOTE: Anticipated usage is for a typical “star rating” UI, with the addition of a notion of rejection.
To ensure compatibility with Microsoft's applications like Windows (Live) Photo Gallery, MicrosoftPhoto:Rating is also added.

  • Excellent
    • <xmp:Rating>5</xmp:Rating>
      <MicrosoftPhoto:Rating>99</MicrosoftPhoto:Rating>
    Good
    • <xmp:Rating>4</xmp:Rating>
      <MicrosoftPhoto:Rating>75</MicrosoftPhoto:Rating>
    Average
    • <xmp:Rating>3</xmp:Rating>
      <MicrosoftPhoto:Rating>50</MicrosoftPhoto:Rating>
    Fair

    Poor

    Unrated
    • <xmp:Rating>0</xmp:Rating>
      <MicrosoftPhoto:Rating>0</MicrosoftPhoto:Rating>
The terms assigned to each color can be customized in Tools » Settings... » Metadata » Labels
  • Important
    • <xmp:Label>Red</xmp:Label>
    Work
    • <xmp:Label>Yellow</xmp:Label>
    Personal
    • <xmp:Label>Green</xmp:Label>
    To do
    • <xmp:Label>Blue</xmp:Label>
    Later
    • <xmp:Label>Purple</xmp:Label>
    Uncolored
    • <xmp:Label>None</xmp:Label>
… and will appear alongside the icon in Info pane » Properties » File » Colour Label.

Cutomization of the terms for the star ratings is also possible, but has to be done by editing xnview.ini:

Code: Select all

[Browser]
ratingLabel=Unrated, One, Two, Three, Four, Five
The wording changed accordingly in the Categories Filter panel but not in the View » Rating & Colour label menu :-|
