Please ID the field for the caption in this picture

Post by taksina »

Hello:

Could anyone please help me figure out how to display the caption data of this picture http://picasaweb.google.co.th/lh/photo/ ... directlink in XnView? I can't seem to get that info to show under IPTC.

The caption is supposed to be:
"epa01731022 A sky train crosses Taksin Bridge over the Chao Phraya river speeding past a traffic jam in Bangkok, Thailand, as it is opened early 15 May 2009. The new Silom extension project runs for 2.2 kms opening two more stations and offers free travel to commuters for the next three months. It is the first skytrain to cross the Chao Phraya River, opening the extension of the environmentally clean rail system, which runs above the traffic jams of the roads and bridge crossings below, to the people in the western suburbs of the growing Thai capital. EPA/BARBARA WALTON"

Here's the link to download the problem picture http://senduit.com/f7471b. It's about 450KB.

Thanks a lot.

:) Hello ! Welcome aboard !

• As far as I see, your image doesn't contain any metadatum, neither IPTC nor Exif…
- The only simple way to get that comment is to use a <descript.ion> file (Ctrl+D).
- Unfortunately, the standard policy used here limits the lenght to 511 characters or less (on principle), so :
a). The comment will be truncated in the file,
b). Just a small part will be shown in the status-bar, because it can't be wrapped there.

• However, some file-managers are using an improved policy allowing a much longer comment.
For instance, I've set your whole text (576 Bytes without the quotes " " ) as a comment in the new
Total Commander 7.5 public beta 4 which supports up to 4,095 characters!
The <descript.ion> file is 593 Bytes, I can read it as a pop-up info-text, the wrapping is also supported.
- But in XnView currently, just the start is displayed in the status-bar… :|

 Kind regards,
Claude

Thank you so much Clo.

You're right. I can read the description in full under Windows 7's standard File Explorer. Too bad XnView could not show it but it's all right since now I know how to extract such info. I have a bunch of files like this one.

BTW, I'm happy to report that the latest version of XnView works nicely under Windows 7 RC 64-bit. Thanks for the great program.

:) Again…
…I can read the description in full under Windows 7's standard File Explorer. …
• That isn't very surprising, in brief :
- The <descript.ion> comment system belongs to the Author¦s of 4Dos¦4NT. It's possible by contacting him¦them to get an agreement in order to obtain an enhanced bunch of specs.,
resulting in the support of more than 511 characters (the Author of Total Commander chose 4,095, but 2,047 or 1,023 might be possible too, I think). Obviously, M$ did so too…
- I'll propose probably a solution to Pierre, whether he can improve that in the above mentioned way…
- In fact, I see two options, one valid in View and Browser preview,
and a simpler one working in Browser preview only
- Hence, stay tuned, and keep an eye on the “Suggestions” section… ;)
