1.97.7 crash while building thumbnails

Post by mattyo1 »

Hi, I upgraded to 1.97.7 yesterday, and ever since, it often crashes while showing thumbnails in browser mode. Sometimes a certain directory will cause the crash, and sometimes it won't. Sometimes, I have to click on 3 or 4 different directories before Xnview will crash.

I've cleared the thumbnail cache, and tried various thumbnail settings, including turning off thumbnail caching altogether, but so far nothing prevents the crash.

I've used all versions of Xnview previously without this crash. My system is Windows XP SP3.

I don't know if it will help, but here is the file Windows creates for submitting to Microsoft about the crash...

I have found one folder which crashes every time in browser mode. I can, however, run Xnview on one photo in the dir from windows explorer, and then advance through viewing all photos in that dir without problems. This directory contains 388 .JPG photos, each 2-5 MB, from a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT. There are no videos in this directory.

A-ha! It's not the thumbnails. It's the tooltips! If I go into browser mode, and avoid hovering the mouse over any thumbnails, the crash does not occur. Also, if I turn off tooltips, the crash does not occur, even with mouse hovering.

So then I re-enabled tooltips, and reset the tooltips to the default, and the crash does not occur!

This is what I've had as my tooltips for a long time:

Code: Select all

<Filename With Ext>, <Size> bytes, <Modified Date>
<Format>
<Width>x<Height>, <BPP> bits
<Date Taken [Y-m-d_H-M-S]>
<User Comment>
After resetting the format to the default, I added <Date Taken [Y-m-d_H-M-S]> and <User Comment> back again, and the crash did not occur. Funny. After some more testing, it seems like you have to use the "Insert>>" button to add items into the tooltip. If you type them manually, or copy/paste them, the crash will occur when the tooltip gets displayed.

I'm not sure what happened between 1.97.6 and 1.97.7 to cause this, but at least the problem seems to be solved for now.

I also get crash after I updated to 1.97.7 while xnview is displaying thumbnails.
It does not crash in all folders. But if I find a folder that crashes it, then it always crash while viewing that folder.
Makes no difference whether I start it directly or start it from windows explorer.
Running windows vista.

A previous version 1.96.5 runs perfectly fine.
I turned off tool tip but it still crashed. Eventually I turned off all the display related to thumbnails, and turned off caching then it no longer crash. I believe caching (I have 1.5GB worth) may have something to do with this. I ended up deleting the cache and re-enabling the cache. All is still fine.

jpeg files
I created one empty folder, put one jpeg file in it, and browsed with xnview and crashed

I also have other folders with psd files in them, but I didn't even try viewing them.

I can no longer reproduce the problem after I played with the options and removed the cache.

Perhaps one way to reproduce the problem is to use 1.96.5 and generate a big cache (I had 1.5GB worth), then install 1.97.7 and see what happens.

This is what I thought too, at first. But after a while I realized that the crash occured when the mouse pointer was over a thumbnail, which caused the tooltip to appear. Try this: have Xnview in browser mode in a directory that causes the crash, and be very careful to keep the mouse pointer away from any thumbnails (e.g., keep the mouse up in the window title bar or something) and see if the crash doesn't happen. Then, hover the mouse over a thumbnail, and then the crash should occur.

Alternatively, turn off tooltips in Xnview options, and see if this prevents the crash.

It's funny because it took me an hour or two of testing before I noticed that the crash depended on my mouse movements, rather than simply the browser/thumbnails. I feel a little silly about that. :) I wonder if the same thing is causing your crash.
