Playstation 4 - officialy announced 20th-Feb-2013

Post by budz45 »

Summary
Moments ago, PS4 Lead System Architect Mark Cerny confirmed the specs and design behind PlayStation 4. Specifics are still unknown, but let's look at what's confirmed so far:

*Supercharged PC Architecture

*X86 CPU - 8 cores

*Enhanced PC GPU - 2 teraflops

*8 GB RAM - GDDR5

*Local HDD

Sony has confirmed the following details via a press release:

"The PS4 system architecture is distinguished by its high performance and ease of development. PS4 is centered around a powerful custom chip that contains eight x86-64 cores and a state of the art graphics processor.

The Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) has been enhanced in a number of ways, principally to allow for easier use of the GPU for general purpose computing (GPGPU) such as physics simulation. The GPU contains a unified array of 18 compute units, which collectively generate 1.84 Teraflops of processing power that can freely be applied to graphics, simulation tasks, or some mixture of the two.

PS4 is equipped with 8 GB of unified system memory, easing game creation and increasing the richness of content achievable on the platform. GDDR5 is used for this memory, giving the system 176 GB/second of bandwidth and providing a further boost to graphics performance. The end result for gamers is new games with rich, high-fidelity graphics and deeply immersive experiences that shatter expectations."

Finally the Sony news conference ends. In two hours, we learned:

• As expected, Sony is planning to release the PlayStation 4, the first new PlayStation in seven years.

• The new console will have a redesigned controller, an eight-core processor and 8gb of memory.

• The PlayStation 4 has a focus on social gaming, with gamers able to broadcast their progress and hop in and out of friends' virtual worlds.

• Sony did not show what the console actually looked like. Hundreds of thousands watched the two-hour event online.

Dave Perry, big-wig in the cloud games industry and founder of Gaikai is next.

"Your friends will be able to look over your shoulder and interact with you virtually" while you play, Perry says.

Mark Cerny talks about the new controller, DualShock 4

Cerny says Playstation 4 will be an "exponential leap" over its predecessors. Gamers will be able to interact their tablets and smartphones with the console.

Playstation "continues to offer the best place to play", Cerny conclues, and adds that he is "thrilled about the vast potential for the Playstation 4 to develop new and even more powerful gaming experiences".

PS4's hardware specifications have been revealed in full.

Sony's next console, described by the firm as a "supercharged PC", will offer an 8-core, x86-64 AMD 'Jaguar' CPU.

The graphics engine will be based on AMD's next-generation Radeon hardware, running at 1.84 TFLOPS.

RAM, meanwhile, comes in at a developer-pleasing GDDR5 8GB.

It is also confirmed to feature a built-in hard drive and an optical drive that reads 6-speed Blu-ray and 8-speed DVD discs.

Elsewhere, it will feature a "super speed" USB 3.0 port, wired and wireless internet connectivity, and outputs in HDMI, analogue AV and optical audio.

Earlier today Sony confirmed that the PS4 won't require an always-on internet connection and that it will not block used games.
