Basically for folks who don't want to upgrade. Either their extensions don't work, or just don't see any good reason for the hassle. Older versions of mozilla only get security updates, newer ones get security+bug fixes, and there there's a nightly trunk where new features are always going in and out and everything crashes a lot.

Firefox 3.0 Beta 2 is now available.

The new Firefox page zoom feature works extremely well. I'll finally be able to abandon Opera (which has gotten progressively buggier and less web-site compatible in recent versions).

"Firefox 3 will remember the zoom level you have applied for a certain site and will zoom automatically the next time you visit it."

Wow!

Here are the latest versions of each major release of Firefox.

Firefox 1.0 [Gecko 1.7]: Firefox 1.0.9
Firefox 1.5 [Gecko 1.8] - Deer Park: Firefox 1.5.0.12
Firefox 2.0 [Gecko 1.8.1] - Bon Echo: Firefox 2.0.0.11
Firefox 3.0 [Gecko 1.9] - Gran Paradiso: Firefox 3.0a8
Firefox Trunk [Gecko 1.9] - Minefield: Firefox 3.0b3 (nightly builds)

You may also want to try Netscape 9, which is based on Firefox 2. The latest version is 9.0.0.5.

And the new social browser, Flock, is also based on Firefox 2. The latest version is 1.0.3.

If you're curious about the Gecko versions and Firefox versions, see this topic at mozillazine forums.
Windows XP Pro SP2, XnView 1.82.3, XnView Deluxe 2.5-1.75.

This is not a common opinion.
But the choice is yours of course.

Time for Firefox 3?

Postby ckv » Fri Feb 06, 2009 10:14 pm

I have been using Firefox 2 to this day and now that Firefox 2 no longer supported and Firefox 3.0.6 just came out, I started to think about updating.

So far only few annoyances and couple smaller bugs have been holding me from updating, but before I do that I would like to know what others think about Firefox 3. Is it as stable as Firefox 2 and what features are better in Firefox 3? Or should I just wait Firefox 3.1?

I know that Firefox 3 has some big changes in it's memory management, which should reduce the memory footprint significantly, especially when there's lots of tabs open. With my browsing habits that should make a big difference (seriously I have about 30 tabs open at the moment  ), but other than that, I don't know any other reason to update.

Firefox 3.1 should be out in the next two months, so skipping 3.0.x entirely would be an option too, but it probably will need couple updates to work out the bugs.
