SE: Order of menu entries

Post by helmut »

Version by version the XnView Shell Extension has more and more menu entries. Time to have a look on the order of the menu entries.

In 1.94 B3 we have:

<Thumbnail>
<Image Information
Convert into
Set Wallpaper as
Thumbnail
Convert...
Edit IPTC...
Copy to Clipboard
Send to ImageShack
Options...

In the current order above, the actions and settings are mixed. Typically actions are more often used than settings and therefore should be at the top.

Suggested order:

<Thumbnail>
<Image Information>
Convert into
Convert...
Copy to Clipboard
Edit IPTC...
Send to ImageShack
Set Wallpaper as
Thumbnail size
Options...

Notes:
- "Convert Into" and "Convert..." are put side-by-side.
- "Thumbnail size" and "Options..." are settings and put at bottom.
- Actions are sorted alphabetically because they are more or less equal regarding their usage.

Of course, if the XnView menu schema was stored outside the EXE in a text file that users could edit (a la TC) then this issue becomes moot for many of us.

Just had to point that out once again. 8)

Yes, right. Currently, the options dialog allows for enabling & disabling menu entries. With some modification it could be used for both enabling & disabling and setting the order:

Please note that I have moved the setting "Submenu" to the menu hiding/showing to make things more consistent.

Order has been changed. :-)

User-defined order remains a suggestion for a future version.

IMHO changes like this have a good cost-benefit ratio

IMHO changes like this have a bad cost-benefit ratio. I think there are other, more important features or bug fixes ...

In my post, I was speaking also toward XnView's menu structure.
IMHO changes like this have a bad cost-benefit ratio.
A user-defined menu structure in productivity software almost always has a good cost-benefit ratio for me personally.
I think there are other, more important features or bug fixes ...
We agree about that, though.

Ok, we agree:

For XnView:Yes, of course.
For Shellextension: It's not such a huge program that it is first priority :wink:
