The little things: Typos, Wording, ...

Post by helmut »

Dear XnView users!

We'd be happy to hear from people who have found bugs in the On-screen texts of XnView, webpage, or Online help.

E.g. shouldn't it rather say "Plug-Ins Information" than "PlugIns Informations"?

The motto is: "The little things make a good product." So if you have found a typo, wrong word or wording, post here or let us know via mail.

Regards,

Pierre / Helmut

I'm not a native speaker, but your above English labels sound more correct to me. Thanks, XnTriq! :-)

#1, #2 and #4 have already been corrected in RC1 of v1.94.

The phrasing in #3 is a little bit too similar now: ;)

Why are those rotation options actually placed in the "Browser" section?

See also this thread.

*"Plug-Ins Information" than "PlugIns Informations

You are correct, Information is the correct form to use.

Information is a word that is the same whether used as singular or plural.

*sound correcter to me.

should be "more correct" than "correcter"

As a native American English speaker trying to help non-native English speaking friends improve their English, I've become VERY aware of just how complex and confusing it can be to learn the correct English plurals, forms, sentence structure, etc! I've been learning Bahasa Indonesia, which also has made me become more aware of complexities in English.

For instance :
words that have different meanings and spelling but sound the same when pronouced...such as....

too, two, to
there, they're, their
red & read

This is an area where spellcheckers fail, because they cannot distinguish and select the right word to use. That's why you often see "there" instead of "their" etc!

"Deskew" is a funny word, to be sure, but it should have no hypen. An internet search for "de-skew" shows no hits. So please change all occurrences to "deskew."

Also, "Deskew" should not have ... after it. There is no next screen, unless the user doens't select a box.

"Deskew auto." does not need the period. "Auto" is short for "automatic," of course, but it's so common that people don't use a period.

My recommendation for the bottom half of the box is:

Deskew manual
Deskew auto

This puts the name of the action first, and the modifier (type of action) second. It is not perfectly English, but it is very clear.

Right, I didn't think about that.
