XnViewMP new icon

Postby thibaud » Sat Nov 14, 2009 10:51 pm

XnView logo wasn't really designed with 16x16 icon in mind...
And i though xnviewMP really deserved a new icon, so i started this.

a bit on the glossy side to my liking, but that's already a start.. feedback is welcome.

glad you like it,
I could help with a website layout. design wise.
in the mean time, if your happy with the current icon design , just choose one of the color (and typo), so I can already decline the various icon size.

:bug: So there won't be an official contest?

I've always been in favor of a logo based on simple geometric shapes — as long as it's unique (vs. an hommage to HL²/CS²/TF²).

I really like the logo (the yellow one).

this topic reminds me of my own awaiting contribution to Xnview with new file icons I made viewtopic.php?f=34&t=18705

Nice contribution, it takes the logo in to the 21th century. The current logo starts to feel outdated and very early 90s, whereas it ought to give the same modern high quality feeling as the software does. With XnViewMP there'd be appropriate with a fresh visual reboot. I think that this suggestion is in the right direction, not sure if it is THE logo but it is very nice.

For the colour, I'd say keep the yellow. It gives a clear connection to the current logo.

I must say that the new logo mirrors an issue I have with the name: XnViewMP. Two abbreviations? It isnt a "smooth" name for a program that handles images. Is it that the name XnViewMP is ... I dunno... too technical? Like a molecule or computer term. Dont want to sound too whiney, its just because I care :) I would consider another name when getting closer to a future 1.0 release.

The result in this logo (imho) is too many different fonts at the same row. However the smaller "MP" in the upper corner is a very nice solution.

Just an opinion

Instead of "icon", perhaps you really meant "logo"? As potential XnView logo elements, those translucent 3-d thingies are OK, I guess, though not very compelling to me personally. Sorry.

An icon is a symbol meant to aid comprehension and identification. An icon is not a photo... it's supposed to symbolize, not illustrate.

IMO, photorealistic effects (such as translucency, or gratuitous 3-d orientations) have little or no place in an XnView icon (or any other). They do not aid comprehension or identification of the icon on the desktop or in a menu.

Yes but it's more funny, joyful and artistic IMO, because the gray, the gray, always the gray ... this is too sad , too pessimist and too conventional.
