Behaviour of opening tabs

Post by Zungao »

When reviewing photos i have the browser showing the thumbnails. I double-click on a thumbnail to inspect the full size photo, then double-click again to return to the browser. This opens a new tab for each image. Is it possible to prevent this and open only one tab per folder?

Another question (new user here ): what is the "Single view for multi opened files" option? I assumed that when turned "off", opening a selection of files would open one tab for each, and when "on" only one tab would open to show the selected files. However I cannot see any diference and it allways behaves in the latter fashion.

Regards,
Z

Have you tried changing the 'Maximum view tabs' to "1" ? -----------> the setting is in Settings > Interface > Tabs

Yes, correct :D

What file-opening method are you using to open your multi image files?? From Browser and from Windows file Drag & drop the setting when enabled does work

Thanks, hadn't noticed that! To be perfect though, I'd like to have the option to set either:

"Maximum view tabs per folder"=1
"Maximum total view tabs"=no limit

or perhaps even better:

"Open each photo in new view tab"=no (and then have a way to force a thumbnail to open in a new view tab)
"Maximum view tabs"=no limit

I have a "Browser" tab with just a folder tree on the left and a tumbnails (large size) pannel on the right. To view a photo in full size I double click on it's thumbnail. To go back to the browser I double-click again.

When selecting several files by shift-clicking on them and then pressing enter it does not appear to work :?:

Do you really think that XnView MP should be able to open an unlimited amount of tabs? It is not a Internet Web Browser...

If you think unlimited tabs is necessary for your needs then perhaps the current limit could be increased from '99' to '1000' OR perhaps an abilit to enter a character into the spinbox value like a hyphen "-" which would give the unlimited.

You would like an ability for a single view tab per folder...So that View tabs each opened for a folder directory? So that if opening another picture from Browser that is from the same folder it would switch to that already opened tab?

Oh ok, the double-click switching method :) (between Browser and View)

What is the result you are getting when you do this? The files you are multi selecting in the Browser are Image files, correct?

Are you sure you have the feature enabled in the 'Settings'? Please also test this feature yourself with Drag & drop of multi image files from Windows Explorer, just as a test.

I put no limit as a "figure of speech". I've set "tab limit"=1, but if the "tabs per folder" option were available I would use four or five tabs. However different people work in different ways and I wouldn't define an arbitrary number (such as 20 or 30). If however the current limit is 99 this should be (way) more than enough.

Precisely :D

They are all jpeg images. And only the first image of those selected opens.

It is selected. And I've even closed and reopened XnViewMP between changes in case the setting would need a restart.

Drag&dropping images from windows explorer to an already open view tab does work as expected. And so does drag&dropping several thumbnails to empty space on the the tab bar. (I hadn't tried this before).

However, if I select a few thumbnails and press enter (or use the open option on the context menu) it always acts as if "Single view" is enabled, regardless of the setting.

Thank you for the explanation. Yes the arbituary number of '99' is more than enough for the average user however I see the visual concern a user might have with he imposing of a limit. :) As I said before a totally unlimited option for tabs could still be made available (e.g. if spinbox goes below '1' it would show a hyphen "-" to signify unlimited number).

Ok, the 'tabs per folder' suggestion sounds like an interesting idea for a future feature and I can imagine the workflow. Perhaps as an experimental feature it could be added as an Ini Tweak (see topic).

Right, so a bug :bug: with the "Single view.." setting not responding for Browser....Only just recently I sent Pierre an email about this.

Hi again,

Yes I too would now like to have this feature and would find it very useful in some circumstances. I think that the feature should be named "Single view per folder directory" :D
