Too bad. :(

It is/was quite simple. Go to Tools | Settings | Database and enter the desired Width and Height of the thumbnail. Alternatively you can press the 'Get Thumbnail Size' button to get the actual thumbnail size from the Browser pane. The problem is/was Pierre chose as defaults way too small values for Thumbnail Height / Width. In the ideal case, perhaps he should ask at the beginning for these values (perhaps in the setup form?). The other points which you raised I don't remember exactly but all of them AFAIR were easy.

OTOH, IMHO this is a lesson for Pierre: The value of a program comes 80% from its human part (good OOTB settings, findability, usability, self-explaining GUI etc.) and just 20% from its technical part (features, speed etc.). See Windows & Mac OSX vs Linux & QNX (and many more examples).

The 'blurry' thumbnails are the main issue.

Have spent a lot of time to get this working, since yesterday.

Tried a number of thumbnail settings, like:
-tag-untag sharpen thumbnail
-tag-untag create high quality thumbnails
-compression: none, zip, high quality JPG
-rebuild thumbnail
-tried out the Get Thumbnail Size button
-cleared all and rebuild again
-un-installed all, clearing caching db (XnViewMP-c-drive-folder) plus re-install
-again tried various thumbnail-settings with the new .db cache

In the end I gave up - I could not get the thumbnails to be the same as with XnView 'standard'. I think someone else, a while ago, complained about 'fuzzy thumbnails' (see that thread). http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=20503
Seems something to do with embedded or so?
Anyway, I think users donot need spend so much time on trying to get things working.

Back to XnView standard now, all is okay. Maybe some time in future I'll give MP a try again.
This is by no means to criticise XnView!

:)

XnViewMP does NOT regenerate the small previews if you modify the size of the thumbnail in the thumbs pane from the Browser. That's why you see them blurred.

Do like this:

Go to Tools | Settings | Database and put the desired thumbnail dimensions (for ex. 300 x 200). As compression, High Quality JPG should be fine.
On the same page click Optimize... and check (at least) Clean Thumbnails

It is better now?

:)

PS: The thread you're mentioned isn't related to the issue, EXCEPT of course, if you use JPGs and the XnViewMP is set to use the JPG's embedded thumbs which are small.

The relevant thread is here: http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=28179 Also, IMHO, my proposed implementation from that thread would solve all these problems.

If you choose the same size for thumbnail in the view AND for the database, you'll have the same behavior

I am afraid AND am very sorry, but eh ... I donot understand.
XnViewMP has a slider to increase the size, when resizing, it gets blurred.

I have Directory Opus (Windows Explorer replacement) which also has a slider to increase/decrease the size, but there the quality remains high.

Please don't say that I should the use Opus then...

When zooming in, using XnView, the quality also remains high.

Pierre, we had a problem

I think that, finally, I had more right with my solution from here than I thought...

I'm afraid that when the user base will grow (if it will grow) you will have a plenty of support requests because of this...

Hopefully, soon I will be able to use XnViewMP without blurry thumbnails (after zooming).
I remembered that whilst building up the cache .db I stopped somewhere during the process as the .db was generated on my C-drive and exceeded 4GB.
My C-drive is relatively small (intended for Windows only)

I don't understand, if you have large thumbnail size for the database, your thumbnail will not be blurred....

Which size do you use?

Attached example.

XnView vs XnViewMP
Same thumbnails (contactsheet)

What do you mean with size of thumbnails?
I think pretty much default.

YES!

Image

For dummies: Put Width 300 and Height 200

- or -

For smarties: Fix your thumbnails as you want. Perhaps make them a little bigger than you want. Press in the same window the "Get Thumbnail Size" button.

Also, compression is enough to have 'High Quality JPEG'

You mean like this?

Note, I am talking about the preview in the right window panel, not the bottom preview.
That one is okay.
