Regex Replace to write keyword/tag from Filename

Would like to use Regex Replace on the $filename and $filepath variable to write keywords or tags.
This is so we can pick parts of the path and filename instead of the while string to write into a tag. I know exiftool has a substitute function in its code. Can this be allowed very easy. I've tried with no luck.
