Pierre,
here's a thing I noticed when using Save Selection.

I open a file and highlight a selection to save.

At least on this Ubuntu machine Save Selection opens the Save File dialog but keeps the focus in the original image instead of setting the focus to the file dialog. Thus for instance pressing W does not enter W as the new filename but instead changes the selection.

If nothing is selected, 'save as' correctly focusses on the file dialog. If some area is selected, the focus is still in the background (as with Save Selection).

Thus it's a problem with the selection.
