0.84: Problems when navigating over large image files

Post by helmut »

XnView: MP 0.84
OS: Windows - 32bit

When navigating from one large image file to the next, XnView doesn't display the second image file.

Effect: Unexpected behaviour. Image not displayed

To reproduce:
1. Download and unzip the attached BMP file (300 MB BMP file, 10.000 x 10.000 pixels).
2. Copy the BMP file and place the copy in the same folder
3. Start XnView and browse the folder with the image file.
4. Open the first BMP file in Viewer (View mode).
5. Navigate to the second image using the "Next image" button (or Cursor left).
Actual behaviour (bug): Status bar displays the name (no info) of the second image file, but it's not displayed. :bug:

Expected behaviour: Status bar displays the name and the info of the second image file and displays it.

I'm having a hard time reproducing this one, no matter if Read one image ahead and Keep current image (ToolsSettings...ViewMisc.Cache) are activated or not. :?

Thanks for trying, XnTriq. I'll see whether I can find a possible detail that is missing in my description above.

I've tried on various Windows computers:
Windows 10 64 bit (16 GB, SSD): Images load very fast, problem does not occur
Windows 7 32 bit (8 GB, HDD): Problem occurs
Windows XP 32 bit (4 GB, HDD): Problem occurs

Each single file can be loaded without a problem. But when opening the first image and then navigating to the next image, nothing is displayed. Navigation back is not possible.

There is another problem:
If you browse to the folder which contains the large images and right away double-click on the first image, XnView displays a message box: "File can't be loaded!". :bug:
If you navigate to this folder, wait 5 seconds and then double-click on the first image, XnView displays the first image without problems.
To me this looks as if thumbnail reading/generation prevents opening file.

EDIT:
Szenario B
Some more observations with large files which might help to find out about the problem.

Folder contains four image files:
#1 Large 10.000 x 10.000 pixels, BMP, 100MB
#2 Small image 800 x 800 pixels, JPG
#3 Large 10.000 x 10.000 pixels, BMP, 100MB
#4 Large 10.000 x 10.000 pixels, BMP, 100MB

1. Open the fimage #1
- >Image #1 is displayed (correct)
2. Navigating to next image #2
-> Image #2 is displayed (correct)
3. Navigating to next image #3
-> Image #3 is not displayed (gray, empty image) :bug:
4. Navigating to next image #4
-> Image #4 is not displayed (gray, empty image) :bug:
5. Navigate back to image #1
-> Image #1 is not displayed (gray, empty image) :bug:

Another observation:
The folder which contains the large image files has a folder thumbnail with four miniature images. But the miniatures of the large BMP images are darkened :bug: The miniature of the small image #2 is in normal brightness. (correct).

Szenario C
Previous test with JPG images (also 10.000 x 10.000 pixels, but only 2MB in file size) has no problems.

Folder which contains the JPG images has a folder thumbnail with four miniature images. Miniatures are displayed in correct brightness.

I've tried out the 64-bit version on Windows 7: No problems. This seems to be a problem in XnView v0.84 32-bit, only.

Note:
Problem with dark brightness of four miniatures in folder thumbnails also occurs on 64-bit. :bug:

I tried with a folder with 7 large files and a couple of smaller ones.
Large files: all uncompressed TIFFs, 11k x 9k, 510 MB to 570MB in size.

Win 7 - x64, 8GB ram, HDD - Browsing is very slow, but it will get there eventually.

Thank you for testing, CameronD. Just to make sure: Did you use the 32-bit version of XnView MP for testing?

No, I do not have the 32-bit version installed any more.

O.k. From what I can see the above problem is in 32-bit version of XnView, only. Did the "0.84: Thumbnail of large images are dark" problem occur during your tests?

No, but according to my calculations, the images/thumbnail ratio was just small enough to not cause the problem.

I temporarily dropped thumbnail size to be 84px (just on 128x smaller) and the image 11118 pixels wide showed the problem, but the image 10899 wide did not seem to, until I noticed a small area of cloud turned yellow.

O.k., thank you for letting us know.

THIS problem still hasn't been reproduced but I guess it's just a side aspect of other defects and will be fixed in 0.85 test version, too.
