0.84 Linux: print multiple pictures: page order

Post by norand »

XnView: MP 0.84 - 64 bit
OS: Linux Mint 18.1 64 bit

Effect: Order of picutures for portrait/landscape printing

If I select some pictures in the Browser for printining multiple pictures on a sheet ("Bildersammlung"), the the order of the pictures is the same as in the browser only in portrait mode. In landscape mode
the pictures are from right to left. For example: four landscape pictures will print automatically landscape on a page. Therefore if I look on the landscape printout, the first picture is at the right side of the page. Since Xnview knows the orientation of a picture, the order should changed, possible a switch "from left to right and tot to bottom on landscape paper" resp. on portrait paper.

reproduce: select 4 landscape pictures an print it on a a4 paper. The first picture is right top, the second right bottom, the third left top, the forth left bottom. This is the correct setting for 4 Portrait pictures on portrait paper.
A simple solution would be, an option for select the order manually, for example the order of selection. A better solution would be a "landscape-switch". The "page-setup" landscape-and-order-switch doesn't work for this.

Thank you for your description, norand. Is this a bug or a suggestion?

For me it's a a bug. I often have motion-sequences with the same orientation like a film-strip which should read like a book from left to right and top to bottom. The read-orientation of the page should be the same of the picture-orientations. I want to choose the _page_ orientation for best utilization of the paper.

O.k., I just tried to reproduce your problem but failed: Order is fine for me.

What I did:
1. Select four image files (1-4) with differing orientations (Portrait + Landscape)
2. Select "File » Print"
3. In "Print" dialog select:
a.) Page layout: "Pictures collection"
b.) Format: 89 x 127mm (3.5x5") [4]
c.) Crop size: Checked
4. Select "Page setup..."
5. In Page setup dialog choose "Landscape"
6. Confirm with "OK"
Actual result = Expected result:
[1][2]
[3][4]

Could you please provide more details? Which format do you use? Is the preview erroneous, too? If yes, please make a screenshot which shows both settings and the wrong preview.

Hello!

I updated to XnView 2.49.1. Thanks for all the work done.

Pictures collection
Depending on picture aspect ratio, page size and margins, we can get more or less miniatures.
Menu File, Print, tab Layout, Page layout: Pictures collection, field Format: option 1.4"x1.8" (35x45 mm) [14].
May be the number between square braquets ([14]) could be ommited.

Printing on a portrait A4 page with all fours margins in zero:
— With square or landscape aspect ratio (i.e.: 1:1 ■ and 2:1 ▄) we get an array of 4 by 8 = 32 miniatures.
aspect ratio 1-1.png
aspect ratio 2-1.png
— With portrait aspect ratio (i.e.: 1:2 █) we get an array of 6 by 6 = 36 miniatures.

Printing on a landscape A4 page with all fours margins in zero the results are inverted.
if we give some margin, the numbers of miniatures also can be different.

says: 1.4"x1.8" (35x45 mm) [14]
better: 1.4"x1.8" (35x45 mm) [32]
