** English - English (=Master)

Official topic for English translation of XnView MP.

Notes:
  • English language is supposed to be master and base for all XnView translators. I.e. if you want to change or discuss an original text, please post here.
  • Changes in the English translations can affect all translations. E.g. "Open in" had been translated to "Öffnen in" in the German translation. Correct is "Open with" (English) and "Öffnen mit" (German).

- Menu Tools > Settings "Options" or "Settings"?
In Windows version it says "Tools > Options", in MP version it says "Tools > Settings". In the options dialog the title says "Options".

- Tools > Settings > Browser > File list
"Open in" should become "Open with" (You open an image *with* a specific program)

- "Sound" or "Audio"?
Sometimes the term Sound, sometimes Audio is used for sound/audio files. This should be made consistent.

- Tools > Options > Browser > File list > Items color
"Items color" does not sound correct to me. Should be "Item** colo**u**r**s**", I think.

- Tools > Options > Browser > Thumbnail
"Labels alignment" does not sound correct to me. "Label**** alignment" ?

- Tools > Options > Browser > Cache DB
"Enable thumbnails caching" -> "Enable thumbnail caching"
"Cached directories" > "Cached directory" (There's only one directory per row).

Would be good if a native speaker could double-check my above corrections (things should get better - not worse ;-) ).

Hello, your changes are all better. :) Should filter items also be singular, to be read as 'filter by audio'?

Thanks for your feedback, marsh. :-) Where is "Filter items" used?

Ah, o.k.. Is plural in "Filter by <x>" wrong?

It matters less being part of a list than in a phrase. I'm more certain about the following:
-Main toobar>"Thumbnails size" button should be: "Thumbnail size"

While translating to German, I've found some more stuff which could be improved:

== Menu 'Tools'
Upload image
--> Upload images

== Dialog "Upload images"
Be careful, your picture file will be uploaded on a public server!!
--> Be careful, your image(s) will be uploaded on a public server!

== Batch rename
File and extension in uppercase
--> All in uppercase

File and extension in lowercase
--> All in lowercase

== Menu 'View'
Show title of pane
--> Show titles of panes

== About dialog, title of tab:
About
--> General

An error occurs
--> An error occured. (?)

== Menu 'Tools > JPG lossless transformations'
EXIF thumbnail - Rotate -90°
--> EXIF thumbnail - Rotate -90° counter clockwise

EXIF thumbnail - Rotate 270°
--> EXIF thumbnail - Rotate +90° clockwise

== Menu 'Tools'
Metadata > Clean...
--> Metadata > Delete...

Some old text are correct, but the new version is simpler or easier to understand. Could a native English speaker please check the above suggestions for typos, grammar, ...?

As I can see now, the above changes have not been made in XnView MP 0.35. E.g. it still says "An error orccurs".

In the English translation of 0.38 I see some issues:

= Message box
"Be careful, saving in this format will lose comment and any existing metadata!" --> "Be careful, saving in this format will loose comment and any existing metadata!"
Comment: Typo in "loose"

= Tools > Search similar files
"Use extension" --> "Same extension"
Comment: I think it would be clearer for the user to have "Same extension".

= Tools > Options > View
"Hide scrollbar" --> "Hide scrollbars"
Comment: Both vertical and horizontal scrollbars are hidden, therefore plural should be used.

= Tools > Options > View
"For video files, extract frame at" --> "For video files, show frame at"
Comment: The frame is extracted and then shown, the important bit is the display.

Native English speaker here. Your proposed "loose" is definitely incorrect. The original "lose" is closer but not quite right. Using "discard" or "remove" might be better. And it should be "any existing comment and metadata".

I think that the 'Info' found in Settings>View>Info should be renamed to OSD

OSD = On Screen Display - ..And is a term most familiar with video player software but in this case could be applied to XnView too.

"Use always bytes for file size" should really be "Always use bytes for file size" or "Display bytes for file size"

En Anglais, c'est plus elegant et plus correct :)

"View all icon in the files as snapshot" should be better named---> Icon files display as 'Snapshot' :)

the word Snapshot to include the apostrophes of '' for it to show in the menu as 'Snapshot'

Actually I now think for English this is better:
(ENG) - Icons display as 'Snapshot'

So that for others it would be better too:
(FRENCH) - Icônes d'affichage 'Snapshot'
(GERMAN/DEU) - Anzeigen Symbole als 'Snapshot'

:)
