Slow performance on Win7 X64 - Large Files

Post by ianc »

Hi Folks,

I searched on 'X64 performance' but didn't turn up much, so here I go:

I've been running XNView for years with great results. Most recently I was running it on XP SP3 X86 on an Intel Core2 Duo with 2 GB of RAM and it was quite fast.

However, I've now upgraded to an i5 2500K with 8 GB of RAM and have Win7 SP1 X64 installed. The HD's are the same 3 GB/s SATA, and the display adapter is a 640 MB Geforce 8800 GTS (if that matters).

Performance with smaller pictures is still adequate, but I'm now seeing MUCH slower performance on larger images (~3400x3400) than before. It is taking about 2-3 sec each to load these images, which is really starting to get to me. These same images loaded very quickly (almost instantly) under X86 XP.

I was initially running 1.96, so updated to 1.98, but that didn't help matters I'm afraid. I do have thumbnail caching enabled, and thumbnail are quite fast; it is just the full image that is VERY slow to display...

Any suggestion to improve Performance? I didn't see an X64 version avaiable for download... Thanks for any help,

Ian

Same version on the 2 PC?
Yes, I was originally running 1.96 on the Core2 Duo machine, then used the same installation after upgrading to Win7 X64 by copying it. When I had trouble, I upgraded to 1.98 on the Win7 machine; but it didn't help.
Do you use option/Fullscreen>Use delayed high quality?
Yes, this was enabled by default. I tried turning it off and on and changing the value to 4000 pixels, but it didn't help... I have also in the interim upgraded from the Geforce 8800 GTS to a GTX 460 1 GB, but that didn't help either...

Thanks for your help!

You have slow performance in view mode?
Yes, in the full-screen view mode. When I initially click on a large image in the browser, the delay is noticeable. The image loads, and when I use my mouse wheel to scroll to the next image in the folder, there is a 2-4 second delay before the image displays on the screen,

Under the cache selections, 'Read one image ahead', and 'Keep current image in cache' are both checked...

Yep, it is the same 2-4 sec delay for the image to open as just scrolling in the full screen view...

What do you means?
I mean that if I double click on an image to view it full screen then scroll the mouse wheel to view the next image, I see the same 2-4 second delay as if I use File|open to select and view an image. Isn't that what you were asking? If not, please clarify...
Anti virus scanner?
I'm not running one. I have the default Windows Defender included with Win7 installed, but that's it...
