The notifier icon (film-strip) and the translucent action symbol (play) in the following mock-up are ment as an either/or type of proposition:

Those look "real good" to me!

I personally would choose to place the symbols inwards from the border by 1 or two pixels. The currentl location of the checkbox (flush with the upper left corner) drives my aesthetic sense crazy...

Yes, I know what you mean. I've spent more time than I care to admit on finding better settings. :P

    Spacing: 4
    [ ] Use shadow
    [ ] Background colour
    [x] Thumbnail back colour: RGB(140, 140, 140)
    [x] Flat style
Thumbnail Label:
  • Text colour: RGB(0, 0, 0)
    Text back colour: RGB(255, 255, 255)
    [ ] Spacing between labels

Very nice icons and cool draft, XnTriq! :-) Did you draw them yourselves? What's the copyright situation?

For many of these it's going to be next to impossible to trace back their “ancestry”. I mean, they're just all over the web!
What I did was to reduce the originals' shape, size and color to the most abstract form in order to have them match those in info1.bmp of the default skin — hopefully without making them unrecognizable:

The last symbol on the right is based on CNN's decade-old video_icon.gif (no longer in use).
