No, setting a background colour which is used when deleting a part of the picture is not supported.

A bit complicated workaround:
What you could do is mark a small area of this (or another image) which has the colour you want as background and copy it it to the clipboard. Then you select the area which you want to delete and paste the clipboard to the current selection ("Edit > Paste", or Ctrl+V).
