0.60 - question to DB categories

Post by herb »

Hello,

I have a *.jpg image without any IPTC and without any XMP metadata. No DB category is assign.
Tools-> settings -> metadata define: Export DB-categories to XMP subject and IPTC keyword.

No I add a DB-category.
XMP metadata are created in XMP-dc:subject and XMP-lr:hierarchicalSubject.
BUT IPTC:keyword is not created.

What do I wrong?

Best regards

Hello Pierre,

thanks for your quick reply.
Because Tools -> Settings -> Metadata say: "... and IPTC..." I have the question: when will IPTC also be used?

From theory point of view: is it possible to only use IPTC?

Thanks in advance

In the IPTC dialog, you have options tab to change IPTC/XMP behavior (a little hidden)

Hello Pierre,

do you talk about the IPTC-IIM / XMP editor? (I found no other IPTC settings).
The options of this editor I have set to "XMP only".
Then I assigned another DB-category and have seen, that in case of - an IPTC tag exists - the DB category is also added to IPTC:keywords.
For me this is in contradiction to IPTC-IIM/XMP editor settings.

If in the IPTC/XMP editor>Options, you have 'XMP only', so assigning a category will write in XMP, and not in IPTC-IIM

"the DB category is also added to IPTC:keywords." but you told me that only XMP is written??

Hello Pierre,

I did some further tests and my impression is, that
- the assignment of DB-categories to an image works in-dependent on settings of IPTC-IIM/XMP editor and that
- IPTC metadata will only be written/updated in case of another IPTC tag (it does not matter which one) was present previously.
This rules remainds me on a rule of MWG, that IPTC is onyl updated and not created from scratch.

Please tell me, how the assignment should really work. To continue tests on this try and error base does not make sense anymore.

Best regards

right, sorry
XMP is always created, and if IPTC exists, keywords is changed

Do you think that an option is needed?

Well, I feel so.

As you see from the community's feedback, the next step after completing the on-disk file management (which I hope to be more or less ready in 0.7) is the on-database organization with the one of the 1st important steps the inter-operation with the other programs. XMP, IPTC, keyword (catalog) import-export etc. ...stuff like that.

The users must be sure, must be feel comfortable that they will not be locked in. They will be able to export their work at any time. Otherwise they will not use this "unknown" program.

PS: On import / export catalog from / to Lightroom / IDImager perhaps I could help ;)
