Drag-n-drop, Rename with search-n-replace

This programme is so good and so fast I wonder if I have simply missed finding the two things I wish for.
However until I have these two features I cannot throw away ACDSee.

1. I cannot copy/move by drag-and-drop from the file panel to the folders in the tree. Yes, there is a right-click system but this is tedious if you want to copy/move to several different folders, and it has an very annoying habit of jumping to the first file when you move a file, instead of simply jumping to the next file.

2. the batch renaming system does not have a find-and-replace feature.

Please tell me I simply overlooked these feature or that they will soon be added.

Moving and copying files is possible by just dragging the files to a folder in the folder tree (For copying press Ctrl key while dragging & dropping). But moving/copying folders does not work, neither via drag&drop nor via 'Copy to, Move to' dialog, which is a real shortcoming.

2. the batch renaming system does not have a find-and-replace feature.

Not quite sure what you mean, could you describe in more detail?
Currently, batch rename can be applied on the files selected, only.
I've tried to work around this limitation by:
1.) Performing a search and view the results of the search.
2.) Select the search results and apply a rename on the files in the search result.
--> Result is 'Error renaming file'

Sorry I failed to find the drag-n-drop to folders - I was too used to dragging with the right button and then selecting copy or move. The left button system is OK and I could get used to it.

I still cannot find a find-replace system in the mass renaming system. For example I have four files with the names Rome_04Apr_1.jpg, Rome_04Apr_2.jpg, Rome_04Apr_3.jpg, Rome_04Apr_4.jpg. I select them for renaming and would like to searching for "04Apr" and replace it with "2004-04".

Can I do this?

For all I know, such a kind of renaming is not possible at the moment. In XnView you have place holders like <filename> which you can combine, but you cannot address/specify only a part of such a place holder. So I think this is a job for a Batch script or a special rename tool.

The only thing you could do in XnView batch rename to bring the files into the right order and to specify the full name as template (no placeholder for filename), e.g. "Rome_2004-04_#" in your case. But this is no good workaround.

Such batch renaming is possible with a utility called "The Rename" from: <http://www.herve-thouzard.com>. It's a separate program and not part of XnView, but it's got a lot of options and capabilities.
And it's free (donations accepted).

I tried same with same result, but only if I did a doubleclick on first file in Batch rename dialog, then showed full path of the file and that was a problem (bug). If I deleted that and only name stayed it worked good.

For example, I deleted underlined part of this:
D:\New Folder\Waterfalls ###

Hi. Instead of "The Rename", you could also use Joe 3.3 (www.lab1.de) for replacing parts of the file name with new signs. I feel it is easier to use.
