Re: Auto-Zoom needs a fix

1.8.3 - viewer - auto zoom - resets to 'No fit'

jkm wrote: Sun Aug 10, 2025 8:56 am There doesn't seem to be any way to get different "Auto Zoom" behavior when the viewer is launched from a file vs when it's launched from the Browser tab.

When I double-click on a file in Windows Exporer, I want the XnViewMP window to resize according to "Fit Image to Desktop".

But when opening images from the XnViewMP browser tab, it would be horrible if the window kept resizing itself; the window size needs to be maintained. Here, it needs to obey "Fit Image to Window".

We need two Auto Zoom settings!

There's already a "Start with file", "Start without file" concept in General->Startup.

Could the same thing PLEASE be added in Viewer setting, one Auto zoom setting for "Start with file" and another for "Start from Browser"?
It works fine (for such weird mode as "Fit Image to Desktop"), I see no reason to add any other options, since
Auto zoom settings are already overengineered with 'Last used' options.

xnview wrote: Thu Feb 20, 2025 10:34 am If you use DPI scaling of 200%, and image zoom at 100%, you have not 1 pixel (image) on 1 pixel (display)
right,
but I have issue with ranges at which you apply custom 'High zoom quality' filters which depends on win DPI scale.
In my understanding zoom-out/in threshold at which you apply filter should always be =100%.

lets compare behavior with other apps at winDPIscale 150%:
  • ImageGlass and FastStone
    apply
    - zoom-out filters at 0-99% image zoom range -- as expected
    - zoom-in filters at 101-∞ image zoom range -- as expected
  • XnViewMP
    apply
    - zoom-out filters at 0-149% image zoom range -- ???
    - zoom-in filters at 151-∞ image zoom range -- ???

Example
  • ImageGlass
Nearest Neighbour as 'None' option, which is a bit more explicit
    Image
  • FastStone
    no zoom-in/out filter separation

File operations - backups - solving conflicts

XnViewMP 1.9.3
Windows11 (24H2), display resolution 3840x2160, dpi scale 150%

File operations - backup
new backup overwrites existing one, which has the same filename (name.xnbak.ext)
so original image will be lost when multiple edits are made

Suggestion
  • improve 'versioning strategy'
in case of conflict - rename new backups to avoid old backup overwriting, eg:
    - add timestamp to filename (eg name.xnbak.YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS.ext) OR
    - follow 'duplicate naming' setting (in Settings>File operations>Copy group)

1.9.3 - browser - filelist - no update after lossless operations

XnViewMP 1.9.3
Windows11 (24H2), display resolution 3840x2160, dpi scale 150%

Browser - filelist

to reproduce
1. open folder with 2 JPEG images in Browser
2. select 1st image
- open 'Edit GPS...' and press Write button
backup will be created*, and filelist will be automatically updated - OK
3. select 2nd image
backup will be created, but filelist will not be automatically updated

* actually, is it really required to create backup after changing GPS data?

1.9.3 - browser - fullscreen - selected image always used in loading sequence

XnViewMP 1.9.3
Windows11 (24H2), display resolution 3840x2160, dpi scale 150%

Browser - fullscreen
selected image is always used in Fullscreen loading sequence, even when other image is requested
issue similar to Double-click in browser opens different file

to reproduce
0. have 2 relatively large files in folder (eg ~30Mb)
1. select any one of them in Browser
2. middle click on another file to open it in fullscreen
fullscreen mode will be activated, however it will display file from step1 until the new file is loaded

xnview wrote: Mon Aug 11, 2025 6:20 am So 'Open in explorer' or 'open in Finder'?
its better to use 'Show in file manager' universal name for this command, which:
- suits any OS (File explorer in win, Finder in Mac, etc)
- uses correct term, show instead of open (app opens file manager and only selects file)

  • ☑ Thumbnail caching (default)
    1. in Settings > Thumbnail
    - check Create from original image if embedded thumbnail is smaller than thumbnail [rendering] size
       OR
    - uncheck Use embedded thumbnail
    2. in Settings > Catalog
    - change Thumbnail caching size to match new rendering size (500x500) or slightly exceed it
    - press Rebuild thumbnails button
    3. reopen Browser tab or restart app
