Just for the record: All PLD files are shown correctly in the regular version of XnView now.

Monitor profiles in XnView
In "Tools > Options > General > ICC" there is a field under the "Use ICC Embedded Profile.." line. This is the place where the ICC monitor profile needs to be entered to make the monitor color management of XnView work. It took me many Google searches and experiments to find this out.

When I use batch processing (f. g. resize) on pictures containing ICC profiles and have the pictures saved in JPEG or TIFF format, everything works perfectly: The processed pictures are left in the original colors and have the correct profile embedded.

Thank you, Pierre, for adding PLD support. Most PLD files, no matter if they contain JPEG or PNG preview images, are displayed correctly in XnView now.
Unfortunately, there are still some PLD files causing problems: XnView can display them in the preview window - but not as thumbnails.
