JPEG XR write support - half the file size of JPEG

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JPEG_XR "delivers a lossy compressed image of better perceptive quality than JPEG at less than half the file size". As well as having other advantages as described in the link. So this sounds like the best format for archiving pictures! XnView currently has read sup...

Re: Sort By Folder does not work

According to the changelog for 1.97.5 this should be fixed. However, the same bug is still in 1.97.6.

Sort By Folder does not work

In the View menu there is an option to Sort By Folder. However, selecting this does not sort and the dot marking the current sort selection does not change. A working sort by folder (path) would be invaluable after selecting "Show files in subfolders".

"Sort By Ratio" have the same problem.

Re: Lanczos resampling "best compromise" option

Thanks for the links. Pierre, the author of XnView, states that In the slideshow, I use the resize feature of Windows, not in view mode. Does this mean the hardware resizing available in the graphics card, primarily used for resizing movies? This is very problematic since this varies a great deal be...

Re: Lanczos resampling "best compromise" option

For me the biggest difference is when upscaling certain pictures in the slideshow with high contrast diagonals. Typically skin (arms, legs, neck, etc) against a contrasting background. Sometimes this produces a very jagged and distracting result in the slideshow. Lanczos typically produces a much sm...

Lanczos resampling "best compromise" option

Many consider lanczos resampling to be the ""best compromise". See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanczos_resampling So it would be great to have it as an option for the slideshow (and other views like fullscreen). It is already available in XnView as an option for resizing in batch processing so hope...

For me there is a very noticeable difference in quality, especially for small images that are scaled up, between the fullscreen slideshow and the fixed size slideshow. It seems that the high quality option does not work for the fixed size slideshow but does work for the fullscreen slideshow. Possibl...

"Description" missing in Thumbnails&Labels

1.94.2, Windows Vista 64 Home Premium English Options -> Thumbnails -> Thumbnail Label -> Add a Custom entry and select "Description" in the >> menu which will create a line called something like "Custom 5: <Annotation>". However, text added by control-d to the "Description" field will not show up w...

This would be nice also as an option for the regular slide show even if not saved. You can select to not have a full screen slide show but then the window constantly changes size and orientation in order to fit the image. The ability to have a slide show in a fixed size window where the images fit t...

1.91.2 Slideshow hides mouse on all monitors

The slideshow automatically hides the mouse after a brief interval. Fine on the monitor showing the slideshow. However, this also happens on other monitors than the one showing the slideshow, if the mouse at some point have entered a monitor showing a slidehow and then returns to the browser window ...

I have tried to disable this option but the problem still exists. Maybe the option is broken so embedded thumbnails are always used? Even if you recreate the thumbnails? Yes. Also, I usually disable the caching but have also tried enabling it without difference. It seems like the embedded thumbnail...

Also, when removing the embedded thumbnails as I do currently to avoid this problem, using the Clean command in Xnview, I have discovered that if the file has the attr...

1.91.2: Large thumbnails with EXIF data on folders

1. Deselect the option to have four thumbnails on a folder. So only one is shown. 2. Select a large thumbnail size, at least the 384x288 in the View menu. 3. View As Thumbnails. This works fine for pictures without EXIF information. However, pictures that have EXIF information will not expand to fil...

Irfanview uses Lanczos for resizing while Xnview uses something faster but with lower quality (=bilinear?). There is a feature request to implement an option for this in Xnview.

Adobe Lightroom - A competitor to XnView?

Obviously not a commercial competitor since Xnview is free and Lightroom will almost certainly cost several hundred dollars. But Lightroom seems to have similar functions, like organizing photos, minor editing, slideshow, and so on. Adobe is a big company. It may well in the not so distant future do...
