I realize that I am very, very late to this conversation.
And my suggestions are going in a rather different direction... and will probably cause a bit of ire.

I am speaking up only because ' SETUP>file-list>custom-filter ' and ' TOOLS>open-with>configure-programs ' are my two most cherished ...

hmmm... what is?

embedded image is what I found in a EXIFtool forum (and obviously) Microsoft uses it.

But I'm happy to be corrected.
I just need to know what I should be using. (and suggestions on how to add it would be great if possible)

Effect:
Thumbnail-view IGNORES the embedded image in any VIDEO files; and always uses your auto-generated thumbnail from the video itself.

To reproduce:
1. take a video that has an embedded thumbnail image; and a video that does NOT...
2. in ...

XnView: MP 1.5.5 64bit

in 'view mode', using cursor-keys to view previous/next files; stops working upon viewing a TEXT file

Effect:
in Settings > Interface > keyboard : I have 'left/right' = 'Previous/Next file'
When in VIEW MODE, I can scan through my files, using ...

XnView-MP started out as just an image viewer; but now handles so just more.
And you have added thumbnails for photos (obviously), AUDIO, VIDEO, FOLDERS and TEXT.
[P.S. thank you for that!]

I am suggesting allowing the user to individually define thumbnail LABELs for each of them.
which would mean ...

You currently have floating-views with 'info pane' on the right and 'thumbnail pane' in top.
(which is nice) BUT the toolbar is also on top.

And having these two things on the top-of-screen makes it difficult to use either of them.
please move one of these to bottom-of-screen.

Is there a list companion file formats that XnView-MP understands?
[hopefully with the full name. Example; I assume '.lmns' is a Luminar 2018 (sidecar data file)]

Is '.xmp' the only sidecar file that is CREATED BY ...

so you would like to use embedded metadata for format that support (JPEG, TIFF, PNG), and sidecar for others?

I tried using:
SETTINGS > BROWSER > StatusBar > FILE-DATE = EXIF date taken
SETTINGS > BROWSER > StatusBar > FILE-DATE = EXIF date modified
but did not get expected results.

Effect: statusbar return incorrect file date info.

I would like to use 'Custom Labels' to display the metadata DATE and DESCRIPTION of photos.
But of course, this data is not in a single location:

In SETTINGS > Thumbnail > Labels > Custom Label:

Videos thumbnails can come from the embedded image or are auto-generated from the video itself.
I am guessing that XnView-MP is correctly detecting the embedded thumbnail image; but is preferring the auto-generated one.

Because (looking at INFO pane > PROPERTIES ) you are detecting the thumbnail ...

I forgot about needing to send you the video. My apologies...
Despite quite a bit of looking; I was not able to find the video that I was originally going to send you.
So I made a tiny one using ffmpeg.exe

hmm... how do I send it? A 7MB attachment causes a 'file too large' error.
