Ah I found it. You have to go to the View menu and enable the Filelist Toolbar.

I don't want many of the buttons on this toolbar. Is there a way to customise this toolbar, or add this slider to the regular toolbar?

I want to hold down a control key (eg Ctrl) and then click and drag left and right to zoom in and out in real time.

This feature is found in other applications such as graphics programs (eg Photoshop) and video players (PotPlayer). Not having precise real-time control of the zoom feels very old ...

I just want to drag sliders to change the size of thumbnails in real time.

I know this is possible as I've done it for years, though I'm setting up a new installation of the latest version. I hope this feature hasn't been removed?

Hmmm. I've downloaded v1.3 and still can't see this option in the list of Toolbar buttons?

This bug has existed for years now.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Go to the Thumbnail Browser
2. View any folder with multiple images
3. Select one of the images
4. Ctrl+c to "copy"
5. Ctrl+v to "paste"
6. Newly copied image appears at the bottom of directory, and automatically selected
