Very good news: the bug can be overcome !
In the error message box, I checked "do not show again" and - miracle - the problem did not happen any more!!!!

I was not aware that a filter on "tagged files" was active; so nothing was displayed nowhere and I was getting crazy...
I changed it to "view all files" and my good old XNView is working again!

I'm running XNView 2.22.
I've a strange issue: in "explorer" mode, XNView does not see any pictures anymore.
I know the picture are there (I can display them in Windows explorer) but XNView says "0 objects".
Please note that no subfolders are displayed either :-(
I tried de-installing ...
