No; no way; uh-uh; nope; nada; HET; nicht.
So far, nothing I / we have tried has enabled XV to import from the camera, while connected w/ USB cable.
But you've gone WAY above & beyond the call of (mod) duty. (Teacher, he said " duty ")
The initial, main goal of all this (there was a goal?) was not ...

Re: Unclear how / if XnView imports images directly from cam
1st, I doubt there's a difference in compatibility of various software detecting my camera vs. most decent, full functioned Canon cameras. Anything's "possible," but mine wasn't a cheap, bottom of the heap unit.
Perhaps the Vista update you mentioned would be the difference? I'll probably try it ...

Re: Unclear how / if XnView imports images directly from cam
No, the 64 bit ver of XVMP doesn't recognize the camera. In fact, the option (in general terms) of "connect to camera" appears to be removed from MP version.
XV-MP has an "import" fuction, but when I select it, it doesn't show any image files in the folders, when Browse to them. It shows "All files ...

Re: Unclear how / if XnView imports images directly from cam
Thanks for looking into this further - it's a lot of work, for an "educational experience." I've been trying to "grad-i-ate the 6th grade" on this, too.

Re: Unclear how / if XnView imports images directly from cam
It's an SX100IS (image stabilization).
The XV is from http://www.xnview.com/en/xnview/#downloads - 2.22 - the extended for windows.
The xnview.ini file is in user\appdata\roaming\xnview\ (not in the program folder).

Re: Unclear how / if XnView imports images directly from cam
OS: Vista 64.
I assume from your reply that XV often can detect connected cameras & import images?
A thought occurred - I'm using XV portable & storing settings in the .ini file. Don't know if that's related to this issue.
No, "Add Xnview to applications for USB events" isn't checked (by default ...

Uh, oh... my Mama warned about people phishing for personal info.
It's a Canon power shot SX series;
Vista.
Are you suggesting either / or XV or Media Detector may not work correctly w/ certain cameras or OSes?

Unclear how / if XnView imports images directly from cameras
I read nearly a dozen posts on issues about XnView acquiring (or importing) images from digital cameras (several quite long).
Still wasn't clear if it's possible to import them directly from cameras into XV.
Or if the best way is import / save them onto the HDD first (Windows), then access with XV ...

Re: Cached image names still show if caching isn't enabled
After messing some more w/ the thumbnail cache list & deleting all current entries, I can't get it to create any new entries.
Before, the caching option was unchecked, but there were thumbnail entries under the "Caching" tab.
After I enabled caching, removed all entries, then disabled caching again ...

Re: Cached image names still show if caching isn't enabled
Thanks.
Pierre commented in one of your links, about a file w/ those thumbnail entries being created, when caching is disabled: "Yes it's normal."
No, it's not normal. It may be the way XV classic & I gather, MP (mis)handle this... but it's not normal. I'm not familiar w/ any other well developed ...

Cached image names still show if caching isn't enabled
If you look in options under Browser > Thumbnails > Cache, even with caching option disabled, it shows a long list of paths of images previously accessed & how many images were from each path (I guess). See attached screen.
Seems confusing. By unchecking the option, you've told it not to cache the ...

Re: Change the area selection border color
Thanks for the good info.
I'm not sure why I would have thought to enter the key word "marquee." That refers to the style of "moving" line - which the area selection outline in XnView classic is not.
Marquee doesn't refer to the function the line performs.
I asked about changing line color, not ...

Re: Change the area selection border color
cday, thanks. Yes, I was speaking collectively about all software & devs, not being able to add everything on wish lists.
I understand about wanting to focus on the newer XnView MP (is that for "More Power?").
Still in beta / alpha, I assume. Not sure how stable (relatively) it's been. I don't mind ...

For plugins, addons -where is detailed info to see if needed
Searching the site, I didn't find a page w/ detailed descriptions / feature list for addons & plugins.
A couple of links on this page lead to descriptions: http://www.xnview.com/en/xnview/#addons , but most are to d/l them.
There are a lot of them - but for some, I have no idea if I'd ever use ...

Re: Change the area selection border color
Holy cow. This has been a request since 2008?
I would think this is one of the simpler changes to make in XnView.
Also, I searched these forums (search bar) several times w/ different phrases & didn't find even one of the posts that XnTriq listed. so much for search.
