I've done some more research:
It doesn't really matter how big is the picture, only how long the Xnview is starting. I can easily replicate it on 5kB png.
It's enough just run associated image and press F2 before the form finishes loading (just, press enter and F2 right after). If the rename dialog ...

Sometimes the renaming of file fails for no reason.
To reproduce:
Random :(
I open file via association (png or jpg), then press F2 to rename file, modify the editbox and press Enter. Sometimes the file is NOT renamed and no message is showed ...

i'm not able to reproduce. you start XnViewMP with the last file, click on menu and rename it?
I'll start the XnViewMP on the last file, press F2, enter different name, press ENTER.
At least one of the logs is with default settings (I've deleted all the settings and DBs in %appdata%\XnViewMP ...

Now, that I'm trying it some more, the crash/wrong rename is not so consistent. Sometime it does it, sometime it "works" just fine. But in all cases it still shows wrong count.

If I have three files and run XnView MP (0.79) on the last one, it shows 3/3, but upon any refresh (next/prev image, click menu, etc) it repairs to correct 2/2. But if you try rename the file with F2, app crashes.
And what is worst - if you run the second file and do the rename, it actually will ...
