Brilliant, works perfect with a simple drag into the new email now showing image icons in the attachment bar.

That's brilliant Pierre, thank you for your help in this matter, it will make XNView even more of my goto all round toolbox that talks to other vital programs that work with my images outside of lightroom.

I have been trying for the last two hours to hide the xmp (companion) files and as stated above the option in "File List" to "show companion files" is ticked but greyed out.
