i did a quick check with xnviewmp.
i saved an image as psd and psb. both with compatibility turned on and off.

the image was a simple one.
just one layer, 100 x 100 pixels, 72 dpi, filled with black.

xnviewmp browser shows a blank white thumbnail ...
