Hi Pierre,
I can see no reference to 'Albums" in Categories. Is it called Photographs? If so it seems to be restricted to pre-named groups - can I not choose what images I want based on my own selection criteria?

Yes, it works perfectly.
If you are having difficulty with downloads being prevented from opening, then right-click the application or file, and choose 'open' from the options.

Are there Albums in the Mac version of XnView MP? If so, where is that function found?

Personally I use Photoshop for editing, but I recently encouraged a friend to install XnViewMp as a replacement for his Picasa app. The lack of a horizon leveller was a deal breaker for him, and probably is for many other potential users of the app. The colour adjustments are very satisfactory for ...

(Running Sierra on Mac, XnView x 64), every time I hit the Draw icon it crashes the programme. I do not intend to use the function but was merely making myself familiar with the various button icons.
