since the update to the 1.6.1 64bit the thumbnails of the directories displayed in the thumbnail view dont show their names anymore. The names are there, if you click rename you can see the name. So it looks like the names of directories are displayed in the background color.

Save the the made settings to a name to invoke this again.
In Example, make a setting for a A4 page in landscape with 3 rows and 3 lines and some separations space, a title and so on and then safe alle the settings to file - could be XML perhaps.
You would need one "Save as" button and a field to ...

It would be nice to have the possibility to save different Contact Sheet settings and of course invoke those again.

Well I can't answer your quetion, sorry.
I do optimize the DB from time to time, which keeps it at a certain size - works for me. I'm not aware of an automtic size regulation.

No, it is not an issue with rights or protection or what ever - I found it, it was an issue with the INI file

All I can say about this, is, that within the settings/preferences there are settings for the catalog and in there you can find i.e. the "optimize" button where you can delete all stuff from empty dir. And there is also a big list of directories where you can delete those not used any longer. This ...

it seems, i've lost the possibility to rename multiple files at once - renaming single files works.
This is the prcess on Windows 10 with version 1.4.1:

Cool! I can life with this workaround as it affects only 0.something percent of all videos - only the freezing was a bit annoying

Update: I just found in another thread here to change the xnview.ini and set useInternalVideoPlayer=false

Now it is not freezing anymore for problem videos, it is just not creating thumbnails - but that's better than freezing anyway...

I too have those freezes on some video files - as read here it looks like it is working on 0.94 beta 1 - well I really would love to try it
