I'd like to suggest the option, that metadata changes can be written *only* to the sidecar file.

In my workflow I prefer to keep original Out-of-camera-files unmodified. When I assign a label/rating to a file, the metadata are written both to the sidecar and the JPG-file. Setting the JPG-file ...
