- Use IPTC also for Categories (missing, I suppose, the fine functionalities of XnView categories and just using IPTC dialog)

You can place XnView's cache wherever you wish and access it from there, so in principle you could put the cache on the same external drive as the pics themselves and update the setting in XnView;
