And are you sure those images are on your main C: drive, not a removable drive?

I was having the same problem on Windows. Xnview would always delete the file without using the recycle bin. I checked the option in preferences but it always just permanently deleted the file. Then I realised what was happening... my images were stored on a USB drive. Windows doesn't use recycle ...

I've tried assigning a keyboard shortcut to category (cmd_category), but can't get any to work. Lots of success assigning custom keyboard shortcuts to other functions, but category never seems to work.
