Well, I guess we have to chalk it up as a fluke.
I figured I would screen record it. And, once QuickTime started recording, no flickering in the app. Closed QT. No flickering in the app.
Restarted the system, opened XnView ... and all is well :)
It just reshades and highlights the expected area ...
