It was jpeg. I reverted to XnViewMP 1.6.5 and it worked fine. So I've just reinstalled 1.7.0 and that now works too.
I haven't changed any of my settings.
No idea what happened. I suggest closing this report.
If it happens again I'll try investigating further.

This problem is supposed to be fixed in XnView MP 1.6.4 . Please check and confirm the bug fix here.

OK I've created some better test images to more clearly illustrate the problem.

Image 1 - I synthesised a jpg of a Passport Colorchecker target in Adobe RGB color space and saved it with embedded AdobeRGB color profile.

Thumbnails generated by XnViewMP for jpgs saved by cameras set to use AdobeRGB color space are less colorful (slightly less saturated?) than they should be.

Further tests show that although the problem is fixed for the thumbnails of AdobeRGB and sRGB jpgs created by Photoshop, the problem remains for AdobeRGB jpgs created in camera which are rendered too dull. Looking at the EXIF data for the files, the difference seems to be that XnViewMP is working ...

I just tried the same test on my MacBook Air (Ventura 13.6.1) and see the same problem.
