Yes, libheif was installed before I created this thread.

With version 1.9.4, XnViewMP now allows for using a locally installed version of Exiftool.
Go to Tool->Settings:Integration:Paths
There you will find an option for "Exiftool path". Use the picker to point this ...

Update: on my ubuntu machine (24.04 LTS), the appimage version and the .deb version both have issues with displaying heic thumbnails. But the flatpak version displays the thumbnails well.
I'll use the flatpak version for now -- The exiftool tab doesn't work, but Thumbnails are more important.

@eddified: Something to remember is that Flatpak versions are not produced by Pierre, so there is at least some delay before new versions appear there, whereas Deb versions are available to download immediately, and earlier versions are available here in the case of a glitch.

The AppImage version works for both exiftool and maps. I'm fine using the appimage version, but it would be nice to install it for better integration with the OS. I'm unfamiliar with AppImage, so now I'm trying to figure out how to install it properly.....
