i've tried on ubuntu 24.04 and it works, here is what is installed

...The exiftool tab doesn't work, but Thumbnails are more important.

With version 1.9.4, XnViewMP now allows for using a locally installed version of Exiftool.
Go to Tool->Settings:Integration:Paths

There you will find an option for "Exiftool path". Use the picker to point this ...

Update: on my ubuntu machine (24.04 LTS), the appimage version and the .deb version both have issues with displaying heic thumbnails. But the flatpak version displays the thumbnails well.

I'll use the flatpak version for now -- The exiftool tab doesn't work, but Thumbnails are more important.

@eddified: Something to remember is that Flatpak versions are not produced by Pierre, so there is at least some delay before new versions appear there, whereas Deb versions are available to download immediately, and earlier versions are available here in the case of a glitch.

Map tab works fine after enabling network permissions using flatseal.

I have tried it. I can't remember for sure, but I recall it had some issues. I think I will try it again.

The AppImage version works for both exiftool and maps. I'm fine using the appimage version, but it would be nice to install it for better integration with the OS. I'm unfamiliar with AppImage, so now I'm trying to figure out how to install it properly.....

I installed Xnview MP using flatpak. The exiftool tab shows nothing. I had previously installed exiftool on ubuntu separately. So as a workaround i tried uninstalling the system's exiftool. Still nothing in the xnview exiftool tab. I have tried using flatseal to give permissions to xnview to use ...
