In my original post, I see that I wrote like many commonly think of f-stop and aperture as being the same. If someone asks "What aperture did you shoot that at?" you say "5.6". But actually in the world of EXIF, they are technically different.
I think the best solution would be to make Fnumber a ...

Re: Filter by EXIF tags
Thank you, but the fields it can search are very limited, and it can't search makernotes at all.
Searching "all fields" to overcome the limited exif selection returns incorrect/ambiguous results when two different fields (which cannot be individually selected) contain the target value.

Filter by EXIF tags
It would be fantastic if XnViewMP could filter images in the browser by EXIF values.
For example:
Show images with Aperture=5.6
Show images with ISO>=1600
Show images with ShutterSpeed>=1/30
Being able to combine any of these would also be very helpful.
As an addition to the above, or even ...

EXIF values in browser details and metadata panel are not consistent
XnViewMP is not displaying some metadata consistently in different places.
Look at the screenshot below.
In the metadata panel at the bottom, the aperture and shutter speed are correctly displayed.
But look in the columns (details view) of the browser... ShutterSpeed is empty (although Exposure ...

Re: Saving ratings in both jpeg metadata and sidecar simultaneously
I can confirm the rating is now saved to both the jpeg and xmp files if both "Create or update XMP Sidecar" and "Update master file" are checked.
Thank you!
Thank you!

Re: Saving ratings in both jpeg metadata and sidecar simultaneously
Pierre, you said a year ago you would add this as an option.
Can you tell us when this will happen, please?
Saving ratings in file metadata and also sidecar files simultaneously is still not possible. This capability is needed for compatibility with other software.
Thank you!

Re: Saving ratings in both jpeg metadata and sidecar simultaneously
Hi Pierre, you said you would add the option to use XMP sidecars and embedded EXIF metadata simultaneously, but I still don't see this option in version 1.8.2
Will this be coming soon?
Thank you!

Re: Rating from the browser using a mouse
Yes, rating can be done through the preview, but it's not efficient, as I said in my original post.
You have to click on the image (so that the preview loads the image), then mouse to the preview and click the rating, then mouse back and click another image to select. To rate 6 images: 12 clicks ...

Re: Rating from the browser using a mouse
Thank you. I tried what you suggested. It's still twice as many clicks as necessary.
What would be ideal would be just to have an option to have the ratings-mouseover that appears on the preview also available when you mouseover any image in the browser.
Since that doesn't seem to be possible ...

Does anyone have any other thoughts on how more efficient rating with a mouse might be achieved in the browser?

Re: audio play automatically in the background when opening picture
you need to replace ffmpeg-6.dll in the folder of xnviewmp.exe
Thank you, I did, but it does not address the problem.
I did what you said, and replaced the ffmpeg-6.dll in the folder with xnviewmp.exe. I used the dll from ffmpeg-6.0-windows-desktop-vs2022-default.7z
Doing so does not make ...

Re: Rating from the browser
Thank you, I'm aware of keyboard shortcuts, but I want to use the mouse exclusively. Ratings and Colors/Categories are saved in the sidecar if settings are set properly.
I'm looking for a way to make rating by mouse more efficient.

Re: audio play automatically in the background when opening picture
I agree that this would be a wonderful and unique feature.
Many cameras allow the recording of an "audio note" when an image is taken. This audio note is saved as a .WAV or .MP3 file alongside the jpeg or raw file. It's essentially an audio sidecar file.
What the OP (and I) are looking for is if ...
