This problem is supposed to be fixed in XnView MP 1.9.2 . Please check and confirm the bug fix here.


According to my first tests this bug is only partially fixed.

Arrow left/right/left now updates the pic (which it didn't do before this update), but if you just save the pic you still see the ...

I tested 2-3 folders and 20-30 or so pics and it seems to be now fixed =)

When you save a new version of pic with save as dialogue xnmp does not show it before restart.

Way to reproduce (viewer mode):

- open any pic eg. PIC.jpg
- use save as to save it as something else (e.g. really bad quality avif PIC-q00.avif or jpg PIC-q00.jpg, choose quality 00 01 or so)

If you want to browse through RAW files (DNG, CR2, RW2, etc...) fast in general it makes sense to have "Embedded preview" under Settings - Formats - Read - Camera RAW enabled.

But once in a while comes a situation that you would want to take a peek of the actual RAW data without modifying this ...

More observations:

- MS Photos is able to do lossless rotation for HEIC / AVIF files (it modifies rotation metadata). But it does NOT modify orientation metadata.
- If avif has both rotation and orientation samsung gallery seems to prioritize/use avif rotation.

This seems to be still a bit of wild jungle out there. Here is my observations of lossless rotations:

- there is 3 different tags that might specify lossless rotation, 1. "orientation", 2. "rotation", 3. "cameraorientation"

- orientation is typically part of EXIF data and typically is modifiable ...

One more lately observation.

Although lossless webp and lossless jxl often create same filesizes there is huge difference in computational complexity between them (at least according to my couple of tests)

Lossless encoding speed of test file:
webp lossless 6 secs
png 3 secs
jxl ...

Anyway it seems that typically XNView MP shows resolution of the preview pic that is located under exif:ifd0:jpgfromraw. For the cameras I am using this preview resolution is half from the full resolution raw.

I have been using sort by feature very much lately and noticed that there is weakness in the program, it is a bit too hard to access and is only available in Browser. I am using 95% of time in the program in such way that I am in Viewer and seldomly go to Browser.

There seems to be bug in avif - save as lossless feature.

I have source file png of 11.6MB Below is what its size become when saving as lossless avif in different programs:

- image magic 5.6MB (quality=100)
- gimp 6.1MB (lossless checkbox)
- krita 6.2MB (lossless checkbox)

- xnview MP 15MB ...

Which version of LibRaw is XNView MP using?

I just checked, it seems that DNG 1.7.x is relatively new and on libraw changelog it reads in 02/2025 that the support has been added. Not sure if there has been some degree of support before that?
