Deleted the whole XnviewMP folder and did a new installation from the zip file.
Started XnviewMP without changing any setting and I got the same result.

Select a folder with a lot of images, Xnview MP will start making thumbnails.

I used ACDSee to add a keyword but I also tried it with Xnview with the same result.
The file date was changed.

After adding a keyword to the image (with ACDSee or Xnview) I reopened the image with Xnview MP.
In the info panel the new keyword is visible in the IPTC-IIM tab and in the XMP tab but ...

When I switch to a folder in Xnview MP the images in that folder are cataloged and the keywords are added to the categories list.

But, when I close Xnview MP and change the metadata of an image in that folder with another program and then start Xnview MP again and switch to that folder the ...

Because the metadata and the thumbnails are stored in a local db i thought that i could use the program for offline browsing but when a network drive is no longer connected and i click on "special items/all" the items that where on the network drive are filtered out.

When i select "jpeg lossless transformations"/"dialog" i 'm able to select whether i want to keep the original file date/time.

But, when i rotate an image without using the dialog: "jpeg lossless transformations"/"rotate 90° left" (or any other option) the original file date/time is always ...

Indeed, i may case the problem is solved by disabling "show thumbnail for folder".

In the settings/"cache db" dialog i can see that the directory from my usb stick is stored in the cache database but when i remove my usb stick and go to <db results> (categories/special items/all) i can see the filename but not the thumbnail.

When i insert an usb stick the new drive is only visible in the folder tree after restarting XnViewMP.

Would it be possible to implement this new feature ?

I can simulate the problem by clicking on the C:\ root drive in the browser.
There is a lot of hdd activity and it took more then a minute before i could switch to another directory or drive.
