Well, if nobody else has this problem, than it perhaps has something to do with my old windows installation and codecs or something like that. I think we can leave this alone, because the workaround I've posted (disable "show first frame") is okay for me, and the bug should be gone with my next Wind...

XVid-avis work well for me, but if there is an DivX-encoded avi in the folder, XnView crashes.

I found a workaround for this: Options->Browser->Thmbnail->"Show first frame of AVI/MPG1": no

strange: DivX is played normally in the preview window, but "show first frame..." crashes the program
