I have the same issue and the only thing I got to kind of sort of work was... Install fluxbox and log out and log into fluxbox as your window manager and use it there Or Create a nested Xephyr session (kind of a virtual window that floats on top of the desktop, I had this working in Kubuntu Intrepid...

Rebuild needed
With no references to non free fonts (helvetica - bad idea).
I am currently running XnView under wine. Kind of quirky, but it runs fairly well and it is the most recent version.
I would still like a native package though, but one that keeps up with the windows version.

Helvetica font issue - Linux
I have had to run XnView under wine. I can't install it in any linux distributiions, as I get this helvetica error. Arch, Slax... nothing. It does continue to run in kubuntu for me, as I converted an RPM to a deb file a while ago and installed it that way. I have tried in Slax to do a deb2mo command...
