I had this problem, too.
If you active the 4 thumbnails in settings and browse your folders, XnViewMP will create 4 thumbnails for every folder and save them in the thumbnail cache. If you then switch to 1 thumbnail for folders, XnViewMP will use the already saved thumbnails from cache and will ...

Re: Portrait photo scrolling maxes out CPU
Which resolution do your pictures have (longest side)? Bigger than 3000 pixels?
Do you have exif informations in your jpeg files?
Do you use a file filter to exlude unnessary files (e.g. non picture files)?
I did not see any problems on my computer with slower hardware than yours.

V 1.87 - help Menu - Purchase - website is not available
In help menu there is a purchase entry, which start the shareit.com website.
In the past it was possible to order a license key for your software.
The website is no longer available. Maybe you want to refresh the link.
Here is the old one:

Nice to hear, I am not the only one who has this problem. Okay, I will try to do nothing until the thumbnails are generated.

My JPEG-XL tests also show, that big pictures use very much RAM for compression.
16 GB RAM is okay, but sometimes you need more ram especially for multi threading (2 or more cores).
A fast GUI and tools is the xl-converter. It also contains the jpegxl-encoder
and other tools.

Re: 1.8.6 - batch conversion - presets do not save jpeg-li compression quality
I usually use the JPG - JPG-LI Format in the presets and it would be useful, if the presets will save the compression level and settings of the dialog window. Thank you. For the normal JPEG/JIFF setting it works.

1.8.6 - XnViewMP crashes in browser view with jpeg-xl files
I have many jpeg files transcoded to Jpegl-XL format.
I have a directory with up to 200 jpeg xl files.
If I use the browser window and open the directory,
XnViewMP try to scan the files and generate thumbnails of the jxl files.
During this process I double click on a jpeg xl file to open it.

1.8.6 - batch conversion - presets do not save jpeg-li compression quality
In Version 1.8.5 or 1.8.6 of XnviewMP you changed program parts of the JPEG components and better support the new JPEG-LI compression.
In batch conversion I often use the JPEG-LI encoder and in previous versions it was possible to save the compression quality settings in a presets!

Re: Batch conversion of large collection (40 000 pics) of JPG to AVIF or JXL
AVIF has fantastic compression, but you need to test it on your android device!
On my Samsung S10 with Android 12 I have big problems with the samsung gallery app.
It only supports AVIF files with color format 4:2:0.
I tested this format with 70% quality and with portrait photos I had small but ...

Re: Batch conversion of large collection (40 000 pics) of JPG to AVIF or JXL
I am aware of lack of hardware acceleration. Samsung Galaxy S22 and newer have (AFAIK) AV1 hardware acceleration so I would I assume? that the same applies for avif. So it should be coming.
Anyway currently I just feel that it is most important that people can open pics, even if it is slow ...

Re: Batch conversion of large collection (40 000 pics) of JPG to AVIF or JXL
Here is an example file, which was encoded by avif (Quality 70% - color 4:2:0), heic (50% Quality) and JPEG-LI (75% Quality - 4:2:0 color format - progressive). I used these settings to get an nearly equal filesize.
There are only a few quality differences. AVIF can better handle flat textures and ...

Re: Batch conversion of large collection (40 000 pics) of JPG to AVIF or JXL
I was in the same situation and converted big folder structures with JPEG/RAW-Files from my digital canon cameras with XnviewMP to more efficiency picture formats (HEIF/HEIC, WEBP, AVIF and JXL) for smaller archiving big amounts of photos for viewing on android smartphone and tablet. XnViewMP is the ...

Re: 1.8.4 Contact Sheet image quality settings not stored
Yes, I can confirm it and I had this error since a few years.
The bug exists since Version 1.7.0 and maybe earlier.
Here is a workaround to save the settings:
