Bad news. It's not fixed. Same behavior.
I would like to ask about the meaning of 2 options under Options>General: "For 'save as', use same original pathname and format", and "After 'save as', change file name". Exactly what do those settings do? Is it possible that the problem is caused by ...

Again, that could have been said at any point in this thread. It's not a valid response to current concerns for some people other than yourself. I won't say anything further.

Now that Microsoft has issued a patch for the WMF issue this thread should be closed.
There are alternatives for Win98 users, just use Google.

As my last post indicates, I actually am quite done with the topic; but to be honest and with all due respect, I find your post somewhat disrespectful ...

Yes, thank you, XnTriq, I have seen that. There are already a few other fixes for Win98 posted at other sites (like this one ) but I trust Steve Gibson and I'll wait for whatever he recommends. Actually, with all the research I've done, I'm not very concerned about the "vulnerability" in Win98, but ...

The only viewer on my Win98 computer capable of opening wmf files is XnView. If I change the extension to .jpg, I get an error message stating that the file type cannot be determined if I try to open it in XnView. Shouldn't that make me feel pretty safe about an infectectuous wmf file disguising ...

I have a unique concern. I still use Win98. By all accounts, including Microsoft's, all versions of Windows are vulnerable, but no one seems to be quite sure about Win98, since it lacks the SHIMGVW.DLL file altogether, so it can't be unregistered. The unofficial patch is not applicable. So far ...

I can't find any reference to this specific problem having been fixed, but I will try the beta. Thanks for the tip

I apologize for bumping this thread but since I don't see any reference to this problem in the Bug Reports forum, I'm wondering if it has been offially noted as a bug anywhere.

Could be. I really don't remember having the problem. Anyway, I guess the only solution is to be sure to include the extension when saving. Thanks for the info.

Confirmed on Win2K. It overwrites without warning if you don't have extension displayed in name box and if extension is automatically added. Example: "1" overwrites "1.jpg" in same directory with no warning box.
That is the behavior I'm experiencing but I don't have Win2k, I have Win98SE.

I did, however, just now make a discovery: If I save the file to a folder other than the one from which I opened the original file (that is, folder y rather than folder x) and there is an existing file in that other folder with the same name, I do get a warning.
I have to revise that. What's ...

I get the same result whether I use File/Save as or use the "Save as" button on the tool bar.
