border around thumbnail in the browser

Post by sullysnet » Sun Aug 21, 2005 4:47 pm

please see screenie for what I mean. I like this idea and makes it look very clean. Apps that are clean looking are important to me but also apps that perform well, which is what Xnview does the best

thanks for all your hard work and adding in everyone suggestions

Does everyone agree with a single border around thumbnail?

I prefer without this kind of border (cleaner to me...). It could be an option, if needed...

1-pixel frame…

:) Hello !

• With the flat style of display, I would prefer a "Simple frame" option, in order to get something like in the TC panels :

—————————Image

- This is shown on the upper rank above, while the second rank stays "as is" in "Flat style".
This should save a large room on the thumb-nails board, as well at width as at height, allowing to display more thumb-nails when we have a lot of small pics, and a so small thumb-nail size (here : 72*72 pixels).
- IMHO, the extra-spaces between the thumb-nails are useless the most times, and could be removed with such an option.
- If it is feasible, I guess it could be a useful option.
• To illustrate that the option could be :

What do you think ?

 Kind regards,
Claude

Clo: there is already a thread that is close to your suggestion (slightly more flexible, though): http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?t=2912

And I prefer this kind of solution rather than the addition of another border.

Not the same

:) Hello !

- The thread you quote isn't really the same. That I propose is the simplest way to display the most thumb-nails in a given area, not to adjust the frames only…
- So, I consider that this topic is not closed, till Pierre gives his own opinion / choice ;)

- You might give a try to Total Commander as "Thumb-nails view" to get a better understanding of that I explain here…

Indeed, the Clo's proposal is so different than the one you quote, since it removes the (useless) extra-spaces, and brings another style of display, simpler and more "compact" which can be wished in many cases. I use it daily in Total Commander too, it's very convenient.
In XnView, the same style could be improved a bit, like Clo proposes, about the frame colour and thickness…

Same here, I don't like it too.

OK, then...

You will notice in the thread that there are several messages, including one that improve further the initial suggestion, thanks to marsh's feedback.
In my proposal, if you set border1 to (x=0,y=0) and border2 to (x=1,y=1), you will get exactly what Clo proposed, that is a thin simple frame around each thumbnail (but you could choose whatever you want...), thus my previous message.

Current situation in XnView
If you set two different colors for "Background" and "Thumbnail back", check them and uncheck "flat style", you will notice that there are currently 3 areas around thumbnails:
- the "Thumbnail back" that fill the thumbnail frame and add a 2 pixels edge around the thumbnail.
- the "3D area" used to make a 1 pixel large 3D effect around the frame (this area does still exist in "flat style": it just takes the color of the background).
- the "Background" that separates each frame, and is 2 pixels large.

My improved* suggestion is to provide control for size (x and y) and color for each of those 3 areas:
- choose the "Thumbnail back"(I will call it "Frame") edge size around the thumbnail, and color
- choose the size for the "3D effect" (0=none), and the two colors used
- choose the size for the "Background"(I will call it "Separation"), and color

Some people may like larger 3D effect, larger frame around the image, single pixel separation (as Clo proposed) or even no separation at all...
It would even be possible to make something like the first suggestion of this thread.

It could look like this:

Code: Select all

...
- Frame X=[] Y=[] Color=[]
- 3D effect X=[] Y=[] Color(light)=[] Color(dark)=[]
- Separation X=[] Y=[] Color=[]
...
There would be no 'check/uncheck' box for them. "Flat style" would disappear (as you can choose X=0, Y=0 in 3D effect).

What do you think about this suggestion?

Olivier

Perhaps too complicated for basic user, i prefer spacing value between thumb, and border size settings.

Right. It may be better to simplify it further...
=> X and Y settings are not really necessary
=> "3D effect" settings might be too much

So it could look as:

Code: Select all

- Border Size=[] Color=[]
- Spacing Size=[] Color=[]
- [] Flat style
- When 'Flat style' is not checked, you would get the 1 pixel "3D effect", when 'Flat style' is checked the area should be removed (0 pixel).
- Instead of "Border", the word "Matting" could be more accurate.

To get Clo minimalist design, you would choose: Flat style, Border/Matting=0, Spacing=1

NICE so it is something some people would like 8) I feel it is cleaner with lines but everyone likes things different. My friend likes to look at pics fullscreen, no toolbar and I like having the toolbar incase I need to do a few things and also I am use to closing the pics with the x

thanks

PS I like the idea that you can choose the color and size of border :) :)
